Commenting on the latest public borrowing figures published on 21 January by the Office for National Statistics, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: 'The size of the deficit is an inevitable result of the recession and the Government's willingness to fight it.
'Public spending has helped to keep unemployment under 2.5 million - well below the levels seen in previous recessions - and is steering the economy out of recession.
'Those who say that today's deficit should be smaller should have the guts to spell out exactly how high they think unemployment should go as spending cuts will lead to many more jobs being lost.'
