OECD Global Forum on Public Governance

Peter Waldorff, PSI General Secretary, is representing PSI at the OECD Global Forum on Public Governance held on 4-5 May 2009 in Paris. The theme of the forum, organised by the OECD and the Dutch National Integrity Office, is Building a Cleaner World: Tools and Good Practices for Fostering a Culture of Integrity.

Governments are bailing out banks, launching massive stimulus programmes, and giving aid to developing countries in response to the economic and financial crisis. But there are governance and corruption risks.  Governments must ensure that every penny counts and is used effectively.

The Forum is reviewing key challenges decision-makers face and is discussing up-to-date solutions for fostering integrity, transparency and accountability in government to meet expectations of the 21st century.

The global financial crisis is a test for governments. Their role is critical in designing and implementing anti-crisis measures. In this time of challenge, the integrity of both public officials and decision-making remains under constant scrutiny and can affect public trust in government. Countries are increasingly required to invest in fostering a culture of integrity, transparency and accountability in public sector organisations to maintain trust and a level playing field for business.

Global Forum participants representing governments, business and trade unions, and civil society from more than 50 countries are discussing how to build a cleaner and more ethical market economy.
